ISO 527-1 covers the tensile properties of plastics and plastic composites test procedures. Tensile properties of plastics are determined through the practices of ISO 527-1 including tensile strength, tensile modulus and other properties related to stress strain characteristics of plastic materials.
The test methods of ISO 527-1 can be used to test a wide variety of plastic materials, such as:
1.Thermoplastics for molding and extruding.
2.Thermosetting molding materials.
3.Fiber reinforced thermoset and thermoplastics composites.
4.Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers.
This test method is realized by pulling a test specimen along a major longitudinal axis at a constant rate of extension until failure of the plastic specimen occurs or until a predetermined stress or strain value. ISO 527-1 requires stress and strain measurements to be recorded through the plastic tensile test.
ISO 527-2 Tensile Test of Moulding and Extrusion Plastics.
ISO 527-2 specifies the test conditions for determining the tensile properties of moulding and extrusion plastics, based on the general principles given in ISO 527-1.The methods described in ISO 527-2 are selectively suitable for use with the following range of materials: rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastics moulding, extrusion and cast materials, including compounds filled and reinforced by, for example, short fibres, small rods, plates or granules but excluding textile fibres (see ISO 527-4 and ISO 527-5).
In ISO 527-1:2012, Clause 3 describe the definition of "rigid" and "semi-rigid". Rigid and semi-rigid thermosetting moulding and cast materials, including filled and reinforced compounds but excluding textile fibres as reinforcement (see ISO 527-4 and ISO 527-5); thermotropic liquid crystal polymers. ISO 527-1 requires a universal test machine configured for tensile-testing with testing speeds of 1-500 mm/min.
ISO 527-3 Tensile Test of Plastic Thin Film Sheet.
ISO 527-3 covers the preparation requirements of thin plastic sheets and films specimens. Thin plastic specimens created with the practices of ISO 527-3 are tensile tested with the practices of ISO 527-1. Thin plastic specimens created in accordance with ISO 527-3 are cut, or punched from a sheet of thin plastic.
ISO 527-3 specifies that thin plastic film of sheet specimens must be free from cracks or scratches, these will affect the tensile test. ISO 527-3 allows for four specimen geometries that can be used for tensile testing. There are three acceptable dogobone shaped specimens that are acceptable. Specimen created following ISO 527-3 can be used to determine the tensile properties of thin plastic sheets and films including the tensile modulus of elasticity and the tensile energy to break (TEB).
ISO 527-4 Tensile Test of Plastic Composites & Thin Film Sheet.
ISO 527-4 determines the tensile properties of isotropic and orthotropic fiber reinforced plastic composite sheeting and film. The properties include the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, strain, elongation and the tensile energy to break (TEB). ISO 527-4 specifically describes the test conditions for tensile testing isotropic and orthotropic fiber-reinforced plastic composites. Plastic tensile procedures for ISO 527-4 are defined in ISO 527-1.
Specimen shape and dimensions is defined in ISO 527-4. In general, the plastic specimen shape defined by ISO 527-4 is a dogbone shape. Plastic composite testing machines for testing plastic composites must meet the requirements of ISO 527-1. According to ISO 527-1 the basic requirements for a plastic test machine that is that the machine is capable of constant rate of extension, and equipped with a load cell, an extensometer.
ISO 527-5 Tensile Test of Unidirectional Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composites.
The purpose of this standard is to define the testing conditions, specimen geometry for tensile testing unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic composites. Unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic composites materials include fiber glass, carbon fiber, aramid fiber, and other similar unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic composites. Multidirectional fiber reinforced plastic composites should be tested with the specifications of ISO 527-4.
The unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic composites testing machine used for ISO 527-5 must meet the specifications in ISO 527-1. This includes a plastic composite tester that is capable of constant rate of extension and is fitted with a force gage and extensometer.
